As 2024 comes to a close, the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA) reflects on a year filled with milestones and transformative initiatives aimed at advancing accessible healthcare across the state. From community engagements to impactful policies, here is a look back at some of our key achievements.
One of the standout moments of the year was the two-day Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) validation session held in December. Officers-in-Charge (OICs) from primary healthcare centers across the state came together to discuss leadership and commitment. Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, ASHIA’s Managing Director and CEO, delivered a compelling message on the critical role of exemplary leadership in improving healthcare delivery.
Dr. Onyemaechi also emphasized the importance of staff training on BHCPF procedures to ensure uninterrupted care for enrollees. During a session held earlier in December, he addressed OICs, highlighting the need for proper documentation and the procurement of approved drugs to enhance operational efficiency and compliance.
Another significant milestone was our outreach through radio programs, which educated residents about ASHIA’s role in improving health-seeking behaviors. These programs provided insights into how the agency’s initiatives are fostering healthier communities.
In April, Dr. Onyemaechi challenged primary healthcare centers to achieve a minimum 25% utilization rate for the BHCPF. This target is not just a metric but a prerequisite for eligibility in future federal programs. The quarterly data validation meetings also provided a platform for discussing self-regulation and quality care delivery.
ASHIA’s enrollment drive was another highlight. The SECHUWARIIS Foundation enrolled 275 indigenes of Amichi in the health insurance scheme, marking a significant step toward universal healthcare. This effort underscored the importance of partnerships in achieving healthcare goals and alleviating financial burdens on less privileged community members.
Dr. Onyemaechi also announced an increase in fees for surgical and medical procedures to reflect current cost realities. This adjustment aims to enhance service delivery while addressing challenges faced by healthcare providers. The introduction of Standard Medical Treatment Guidelines further ensured that quality standards were maintained, reducing code denials and improving patient outcomes.
As we step into 2025, ASHIA remains steadfast in its mission to provide quality healthcare services to all residents of Anambra State. The progress made in 2024 would not have been possible without the dedication of our staff, the commitment of our partners, and the trust of our beneficiaries.
We look forward to another year of transformative healthcare initiatives. Thank you for being part of this journey.
Warm regards,
Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi
