In a remarkable move to improve healthcare access, the Mayor of Anaocha Local Government Area, Comrade Romanus Ibekwe, in collaboration with St. Cletus Health Foundation, has successfully enrolled 1,200 indigenes from various communities within Anaocha LGA into the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme.
The mass enrollment exercise took place on the 26th of April, 2025, at the Anaocha Local Government Headquarters. Staff of the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA) were on ground to facilitate a smooth registration process for the beneficiaries.
In his opening remarks, Comrade Ibekwe emphasized the vital importance of prioritizing one’s health. He noted that without good health, survival becomes a challenge. He further cautioned the public against patronizing quack medical practitioners, warning that while such options may seem quick and cheap, they often lead to long-term health damages.
Representing the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ASHIA, Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, Mrs. Ngozi Agajelu reinforced the essence of health insurance. She explained that the primary aim is to protect individuals and families against catastrophic health expenditures. “With health insurance, you have the assurance that even when illness strikes, you will not be financially stranded,” she stated.
Also present at the event was the proprietor of St. Cletus Hospital, Mr. Chibuike Obianodo, who expressed his gratitude to the Mayor and ASHIA for their commitment to promoting accessible healthcare. He encouraged the beneficiaries to maximize the opportunity by consistently seeking medical care from accredited facilities, thus safeguarding their health and wellbeing.
This gesture was widely applauded by the beneficiaries, many of whom expressed relief at being able to access quality healthcare without financial stress. A newly enrolled beneficiary, Mr. Ezeani Godwin, expressed delight at the initiative, describing it as “a huge relief for ordinary citizens who often struggle with medical bills.” He thanked the organizers for remembering the needs of the people.
